How To Design a Universe

There are universes everywhere. We encounter them in books, films, TV series, computer games, role-playing games, transmedia entertainment and so forth. Universes are the basis of all fiction and can be applied across all media platforms. Visual design and art is essential when new worlds are build and infinite universes created. But how is it done ?

The book How to Create a Universe (Håndbog i Universskabelse) is for professional artists, researchers and students who seek inspiration, insight, and hand on tools to get started creating story worlds and fictional universes of the future.

In this talk the authors (Jakob Ion Wille, Simon Jon Andreasen and Gunnar Wille) will sheds light on some of the methodologies presented in the book and get you started if you want to build your own universe.

JAKOB LON WILLE, 

SIMON ANDREASEN

& GUNNAR WILLE

Jakob Ion Wille is a dramaturg, PhD and associate professor at the Royal Academy's Department of Visual Communication, and head of the educational program Visual Game and Media Design. where he researches and teaches production design, visual narratives and story worlds. Has worked with films, TV series and exhibition design as a screenwriter and has published a number of research articles and books on e.g. production design and world building.  

 

Simon Jon Andreasen is former head of the Danish Film School's Animation Instructor education, academy leader of Dadiu (The Danish Academy of Digital Interactive Entertainment), member of a number of boards and advisory boards for e.g. ITU, Mansukriptskolen for Børnefiktion, Multiplatform Storytelling VIA and a number of cultural institutions and private companies. Simon is self-taught and has directed radio, documentaries, TV series and computer games for national and international media houses. In addition, Simon is now doing an artistic PhD at the National Film School of Norway 

 

Gunnar Wille has been an artist for the last 50 years, He has been working with film, theater and television. He has written, designed and produced television series. Written, designed and directed animated films and radio series. He has written and illustrated books. Gunnar Wille has made computer animated experiments and explored fragmented narrative in computer games, TV shows and books. Has developed a large project with fragmented narratives in a variety of media and build universes. Gunnar Wille has been head of the animation department at The National Film School of Denmark. Head of DADIU, The Danish National Academy of Digital, Interactive Entertainment. Head of EUCROMA, The European Cross media Academy.
